Description

A Pair of Chinese Yellow Glazed Incised Porcelain 'Dragon' Dishes, Qianlong Marks and of the Period
清乾隆 嬌黃釉龍紋碟一對

Qianlong Marks and of the Period (1735-1796)

Each circular dish with rounded cavetto, and is raised on a short foot, the center incised with a sinuous five-clawed dragon grasping a circular Shou symbol, surrounded by flames, a flaming jewel to the right; the exterior incised with crashing waves, stylized rockwork, and four beribboned auspicious symbols, pale mustard yellow glaze, the white glazed underside with a Qianlong six-character mark in official script within a double circle in underglaze blue and of the period; modern silk box; modern wood stands.
Note:
For a small yellow glazed saucer dish with similar incised motifs, see the example sold at Sotheby's London, November 7, 2012, lot 395. The six-character mark in the official script on the present dish is unusual. The calligraphy of the reign marks relates to those found on Yongzheng mark and period wares and suggests production of the present pair early in the reign of the Qianlong Emperor.

Diameter of each 4 1/4 in. 10.8 cm.
